 In parallel with the growth of brewing for the community another method evolved, the brewing of beer in monasteries where the techniques were further improved. The monks recorded their experiences and passed them on to their successors and thus able to continue development. They also passed on their knowledge to monasteries else where. The period 1300 to 1650 was marked by extremely high consumption. According to estimates, people consumed 1111 mugs a year per head and that included women, children and the elderly!
